VF helps Yangtze River International Conference Center set sail

Water is invisible, colorless and tasteless; when the wind disturbs, there are water lines; it is ever-changing and takes shape with things.

The "Water: Twelve Views" painted by Ma Yuan in the Southern Song Dynasty is an art series with twelve pieces of raw silk, which express the shape of water throughly and vividly. The figure: "waves after waves", spindrifts swirling in waves, violently colliding, invigorating visitors one by one .

Superimposed waves, the fusion of nature and humanity

The design concept of the Yangtze River International Conference Center was inspired by this painting. It was jointly designed by the American Morphosis Architects and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and Research to reinterpret its oriental charm with modern architectural language. The building integrates with the riverside scenery, embodies the elements of waves and sails everywhere. The ripples of the breeze, the haziness of the moonlight, the brush and ink, the light and the shadow, the heart and the soul, and the far-reaching and broad-minded artistic conception, all cater to the principles of painting water.

Nanking is the ancient capital and was named as “Jinling”, a Geomantic Treasure Land in the south of the Yangtze River. As the permanent address of the Cross-Strait SME Purple Mountain Summit , the Yangtze River International Conference Center is located on the bank of the Yangtze River in Nanjing. As a new landmark on the banks of the Yangtze River, it is of great significance to enhance Nanjing's international influence and the urban functional quality of Jiangbei New District.

Set sail, cross the waves and shadow

The interior design is based on the theme of "Literary Talent and Splendid", adding the concepts of "intersection, tolerance, and navigation", which is intended to show the Nanjing culture—— "a beautiful emperor state in the south of the Yangtze River ", which is closely integrated with the charm of the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties and blended with the culture of Yunjin, the light and the building collide, showing the heavy history and vigorous vitality of Jiangbei New District.

The lighting design concept of the project aims to highlight the theme of "light of city, light of innovation. Set sail, cross the waves and shadow", carrying people's positive vision for the future development of Jiangbei New District. In order to meet the requirements of green building criterion and create a healthy and comfortable indoor light environment. VF worked closely with designers, through technical means such as debugging, optimizing standards and custom optics over a period of more than a year, and finally realized the whole visual quality improvement of the conference center.

The project is constructed in accordance with the three-star green architectural standard. The interior of the building uses a T-shaped central corridor as the core to connect multiple functional areas in series. The coherent skylight on the top of the corridor is like the spine of the building. A large number of streamlined shapes are full of tension and give people a magnificent and spectacular view. The corridor area adopts VF customized 30W 4000K linear lamp. The bright light changes with time, which complements the fluid inner surface of the building. It adds surging vitality to the space and makes people feel the vision intertwined by the spatial shape and changes of light and shadow.

Landing hall

The landing hall made of high-transmittance glass and curtain wall utilizes daylight lighting to the greatest extent. As night falls, the customized VF 40W 60D 4000K diamond-shaped lamp is integrated between the ceilings. The silhouette of the light framed in the night contrasts with the texture of the building during the day, making the building extraordinarily crystal clear and allowing people to fully experience the building when they are in it. The magnificence and modern atmosphere of the space, feel the poems of the beautiful scenery of the landmark buildings on the Yangtze River.

Corridor

The corridor is embedded in the metal ceiling with 30W 4000K linear lights and the hanging 30W 60D 4000K POYO downlights illuminate the corridor. While providing basic lighting for this space, it also guides visitors. The light spots meet the metal ceiling, and the soft light makes the space full of agility.

Conference Center

As the main place for Nanjing to undertake international high-level conferences and forums in the future, the Yangtze River International Conference Center has lighting design that not only meets the indoor illuminance functionally, but also meets the needs of various activities in the conference hall.

The ceiling shape of the conference hall is derived from the ripples of the water. The sunlight hits the ripples and presents diamond-shaped spots. Through deformation, it adopts a dense arrangement in the middle and slowly sparsely arranged on both sides. The lighting designer uses VF 30W 60D 4000K ALPS downlights on the top of the ceiling. While the soft and bright light provides basic lighting, and when the light hits the water, it presents a diffused effect, providing a quiet and elegant environment for the meeting hall. 

The built-in 20W 25D 4000K MIZAR wall washer lights the walls evenly, highlighting the woven structure of brocade, and the perfect combination with the top contour, shaping the scene of superposed waves, creating a pure and transparent indoor atmosphere.

The starry sky ceiling composed of 40W 60D 3000K ALPS downlights and decorative lanterns, as well as MIZAR wall washers embedded in the wall, creates a picture that complements the environment and conveys the spirit of harmonious and orderly oriental aesthetics. The organic integration of lighting and architecture adds interest to the space, highlighting its simple and elegant style, and constructing a modern structuralist architecture with oriental charm, making the space integrated, unified and magnificent.

Difficulties and Solutions

The metal mesh ceiling inside the building, the complex curved surface of the corridor and the continuous influx of sunlight from the outside are all factors that affect the indoor lighting. In order to avoid the impact of high-reflectivity materials on the light spot effect and ensure a reasonable structure and a uniform light effect, the project implemented a high-efficiency lighting scheme by customizing a diamond-shaped lamp.

Based on the principles of "people-oriented" and "green lighting", VF has achieved high luminous efficiency and low glare (UGR<13) lighting solutions through customized diamond-shaped lamp body appearance, strict light source selection, and innovative optical design. Repeated trials and simulations, demonstrations, strict control of light, custom dimming (0-10V) and angle adjustment (30°/40°/60°) to meet the functional lighting and lighting requirements of the conference center, and present the space with appropriate light.
